BALI Style




Bali is one of thousands of islands constituting the Indonesian Archipelago that has long been renowned as an eminent tourist destination in the South Pacific or even in the World. Many names have been given to this beautiful island, like, 'The Last Paradise on Earth', 'Morning of the World', 'The Island of the Gods', as well as many other names.



The island covers 5,632,86 square kilometres, consisting of mountain ranges stretching from the West tip to Mt. Agung in the East, considered as the holiest by the Balinese, being the highest peak.

The volcanic range divides the island into two parts of plain which are constantly cultivated with rice as the staple crop. About 70% of the whole island is agricultural ground, while another 22% consists of forests and the remaining 8% is left uncultivated. It has for centuries lured visitors from various countries with its exotic and vibrant culture, natural scenic beauty, and friendly smiles of the people.





The stronghold of their traditions and beliefs based on Hinduism, has dotted the island with ancient remains, ornately sculptured temples or holy places and this is most likely the main factor in keeping away any negative outside influence.


To the wide variety of landscapes and marvellous panoramas, the Balinese add their colourful festivals, ritual ceremonies, traditional music and dances and it is no wonder that tourism plays a significant role as a source of income within the national economic development.

As has been mentioned in many articles, Indian influence has been great on all aspects of Balinese culture. That includes architecture. It is evident in the mandala-like groupings of houses in the villages. The Chinese were a major influence on Indonesian culture, but not on architecture, and neither were the Dutch.


The family compound (kuren) is a centre of religious life for the family and is constructed according to traditional rules. It undergoes periodic cleansing rituals. The materials used have to cope with equatorial conditions, which are hot and humid, and heavy monsoon rains. There are wooden or bamboo walls and thatched roofs. Unlike the rest of Indonesia, Java and Bali do not build their houses on stilts.

Traditional Balinese houses, temples, rice barns and other structures are built according to traditional Balinese rules, called Asta Kosala Kosali, written down in lontar palm books and interpreted by traditional architects called Undagi. Balinese architects do not design buildings; they merely interpret the traditional rules.



The roles of architect, builder and client are a phenomenon of an industrialized society. Such classification is unknown in Bali.

Materials
Housing consists of a series of small constructions. They mostly consist of wooden pillars raised on a masonry base, which support a roof of radiating beam work, covered by thatch, tiles or bamboo. Roofs are crowned by a terracotta finial (ornament).

The buildings are assembled with very few nails. Tools are simple hammers, chisels, saws, axes and a plane. Walls are generally of brick, tuff or other masonry. Posts and beams carry the load of the roof.

Some roofs are still made of alang-alang grass. This thatch, often 45 cm (18 in) thick used to last for up to 50 years. But nowadays it is almost impossible to get good quality alang-alang and ceramic tiled roofs are more common. They are also less of a fire risk.





A patron of arts, Dewa Agung Gusti Sideman took greatness in supervising the design and construction of his palace in Klungkung - an example of Hindu-Balinese architecture. Kertha Gosa architecture took shape of a mandala - a Buddhist influence domed-mountain shape. Mandalas help people further their enlightment; pure forces of good come from a mountain. Kertha Gosa’s first major function pertained to court of law and justice. The Kertha Gosa pavilion was the meeting place for the raja (Hindu prince) and Brahman judges (Kerthas) to discuss issues of law and human affairs. Whether or not the king instructed his court painters to decorate the ceiling at the time Kertha Gosa was built is impossible to know. Moreover, it is impossible to know whether or not the story of Bhima Swarga was the first painting in the pavilion.





The earliest and only record of paintings at Kertha Gosa dates from the year 1842 and is written in a lontar book (a book that holds prayers, history of Bali, and epics)

Balinese house (kuren) consists of a family or a number of related families living within one enclosure, praying at a common family temple, with one gate and one kitchen. The square plot of land (pekarangan) in which the various units. of the house stand is entirely surrounded by a wall of whitewashed mud, protected from rain erosion by a crude roofing of thatch. The Balinese feel uneasy when they sleep without a wall, as, for instance, the servants must in the unwalled Western-style houses. The gate of a well-to-do family can be an imposing affair of brick and carved stone, but more often it consists of two simple pillars of mud supporting a thick roof of thatch. In front of the gate on either side 'are two small shrines (apit lawang) for offerings, of brick and stone, or merely two little niches excavated in the mud of the gate, while the simplest are made of split bamboo.



 
Directly behind the ' doorway is a small wall aling aling that screens off.The house of a poor family is called pekarangan, that of a nobleman is a jero and a Brahmana's is a griya, but these differences are mostly in the name, the quality of the materials employed, the workmanship, and of course in the larger -and richer family temple. The fundamental, plan is based on the same rules for everyone.

Only the great palace (puri) of the local ruling. prince is infinitely more elaborate, with a lily pond, compartments for the Radja's brothers and his countless wives, a great temple divided into three courts, and even special sections for the preservation of the corpses and for the seclusion of " impure " palace women during the time of menstruation.




Clay House Style

Eco-friendly clay houses are produces using wet clay bricks which are shaped and dried in order to harden. The drying process is crucial because it is responsible for the strength of the home. Particles in the clay fuse and develop extremely tight ceramic bonds which are almost inseparable.





Now, I am not a rocket scientist or a rock scientist :) but the concept is easy to understand. Clay houses are nearly invincible to most weather conditions and un-phased by chemical attacks. These benefits alone make clay homes a sound investment. However, I have only touched the surface. Let's move on to the good stuff.










Cost
Clay houses like all homes have some upfront expense when building. But costs are lower than traditional homes by as much as 50-percent. In addition, maintenance for a clay house is very cheap. Think about it. Clay won't warp, dent, rust, peel, get eaten alive by termites, or experience any of the other problems that most homes go through. Because of this, the only thing you really have to pay for is accessories (paint, plumbing, electrical, etc).






Insulation
Clay houses do a great job of providing thermal and acoustic insulation? What do I mean? Basically, if you live in a clay house, you can expect to stay warm (or cool depending on the weather) and not have to worry about major sound waves entering or leaving the room. This is because clay has the ability to slowly absorb heat and sound and release them in the opposite direction.



Flexibility
Since clay is such an active solution (can be molded easily), it really gives you the option of warping the home exactly to your liking. You see, cement blocks or bricks usually come in standard sizes which you must incorporate into your building strategy if you want everything to fit properly. With clay, you are the ultimate creator and can morph and play with the shapes until they are exactly to your liking. This is why Detroit automakers usually develop concept cars with a clay outer coating first so they can mold them into the desired design.



 
Fireproof
You would be lucky to burn down a clay home after you've poured gasoline all over it and lit it on fire. This is because the material that clay homes are produced from is very fire resistant. This concept has been around for a long time. Back in the mid 1800's, people became enlightened and began switching their wooden homes for ones made of clay, mud or stone. Looks like things have come full circle especially for environmentalists interested in green homes and green home building.
Also, fireproof natural can save money of insurance premiums. For example, homes which are in areas that are more prone to fires have to pay more in insurance. Your insurance company may give you a lower rate for insuring a house made of clay against fire damage.


Conclusion
With people more environmentally aware today and also enlightened as to how green homes can save big money in building materials and energy savings it is no wonder that clay houses are making a comeback.

 

Straw/clay has been in use for thousands of years with great success. The focus of our blog is obviously earthbag building, but we’ve decided to include coverage of other natural building methods to broaden our horizons and reach a wider audience. It’s good to know a whole range of building ideas so you can obtain the best possible house. For instance, maybe you want to use earthbags on exterior walls and straw/clay on interior walls. This is a very good option that requires no formwork. You could stuff straw/clay inside pallet walls for soundproofing between rooms. Most often straw/clay is combined with a timberframe that carries the loads.
“One of the best low-cost insulating materials is clay-coated straw (or other lightweight plant materials). A light coating of clay acts as both a binder and preservative. Clay-coated straw has been shown to last over 700 years as a non-deteriorating insulation! As the clay dries, it binds the straw together in a surprisingly rigid mass. It’s a “natural styrofoam”.



Materials

Any stiff agricultural waste similar to straw will work. Hay is too flimsy and has seeds, so it doesn’t work very well. Barley straw, wheat straw, and other grain straws work well. Clay can be gotten from the earth. Many subsoils are primarily clay. River bottoms and river banks are usually clay. Clay is also used by brick and tile manufacturers and can be bought from them cheaply. (in our area, about $16 per ton)
Even soil which has a moderate amount of clay such as commonly used for adobe, about 35-50% clay, will work. The slurry is not as sticky, compared with pure clay, but even ordinary mud works well enough. This is not rocket science. Use a dry wall stirring paddle and electric drill to mix the clay or mix in any kind of mixer. Mud mixed in a box with a hoe works.


Method
1. Break the clay into small particles so that it will mix with water easily.
2. Make up a slurry of clay and water. Any soil that is mostly clay will also work. The consistency should be like cream or a thin milk shake.
3. Spread the straw out on the ground. Dampen the straw with a spray nozzle if available.
4. Pour (drizzle) the slurry over the straw, then toss and mix the straw so that it becomes lightly coated. Ordinary garden rakes work well. The clay should only very lightly coat the straw. This is NOT adobe. Maybe 5-10% clay, 90-95% straw. When dried in the wall, you can hardly see the clay, but it binds the straw together very well.




Uses
In addition to being an insulator, it can be used as a wall forming material. In the middle ages, even up to the present time, the method works like this:
1. A post and beam structure is first built.
2. Two boards are temporarily nailed to the posts, one on each side.
3. The resulting cavity is filled with straw-clay.
4. The material is tamped down (a 2×4, 4×4, or small post will do). The idea is not to compact it into a solid mass, you couldn’t do it easily anyway because the straw will remain springy until it dries.
5. The two side boards are moved up immediately and stuffed again and again until the wall is as high as desired. No need to wait for the straw-clay to dry before moving the boards up. (A moveable, sliding form could also be used to make walls.)
6. A saw is used to cut out windows, or window frames are placed first.
7. The wall is allowed to dry and is hand plastered inside and out. The soft undulating plastering adds a charm that cannot be found in modern buildings.”



Glass House Style






The Glass House offers very little privacy, even on such a large estate, so Johnson built a second building at the same time, one that is predominantly solid. (Skylights and windows facing north bring in natural light.) The two buildings face each other across a well-manicured lawn, a surface that reinforces the Glass House as being a pavilion, a statement in the landscape.


The Glass House is built of three main materials: glass, steel (painted black) and brick. The glass panes are large (about 8 feet tall and 13 to 17 feet wide), but they don't quite reach from ceiling to floor. Smaller panes at the base provide a modern version of a chair rail at the perimeter, but they do not include operable vents; doors in the center of each elevation would have to be opened to naturally ventilate the interior.


The steel is carefully articulated to blur the distinction between structure and framing. Unlike the Farnsworth House's clear sense of structure, the Glass House appears to be a roof propped upon glass walls and framing.




The third material is brick, which is used for the floor and a bathroom enclosure that also acts as a hearth (next photo). The herringbone pattern on the floor creates some ambiguity between inside and outside, especially as it is always seen with the lawn extending from it on all sides.






The interior of the Glass House is completely exposed to the outdoors except for the a cylinder brick structure with the entrance to the bathroom on one side and a fireplace on the other side. The floor-to-ceiling height is ten and a half feet and the brick cylinder structure protrudes from the top. The floor is also made of red brick laid out in a herringbone pattern and is raised ten inches off of ground level. The only other divisions in the house besides the bathroom are discreetly done with low cabinets and bookshelves, making the house a single open room. This provides ventilation from all four sides flowing through the house as well as ample lighting.




Although the house is the primary attraction on the site, Johnson used the expansive land around it to allow his imagination to run and build thirteen more structures that include a guest house, an art gallery, and a sculpture pavilion. The guest house, connected to the Glass House with a stone path that lays over the expansive lawn immediately surrounding it, is a heavy brick structure, contrasting the extreme lightness and transparency expressed in the Glass House. The art gallery is buried underground in order to not take away attention from the house, making it windowless which is uncommon for a gallery. Wright’s other notable experiment on the site included a sculpture gallery which is “an asymmetrical white-brick shed with a glass roof…conceived as a series of interlocking rooms that step down around an open, central space.”



Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1997, the Glass House is still considered a modern marvel. The beauty in its composition along with the rolling landscape have people travelling to visit and experience it firsthand every day, and with the lines of the Glass House and the other buildings smoothly blending in with the lines of the horizon and the surrounding landscape, one can feel a breathtaking sensation of endlessness.
